What Is A Veteran?

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve --
Is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made
payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and
including his life.'

                          Valentine's Day Visit 2010

Valintine's Day visit to area Veterans' Homes a success   A stormy snowy  morning could not keep about 30 South Jersey area residents from making their annual " Valintine's Day " trip to the Vineland New Jersey and Elsmire Delaware Veterans homes on February 16 . Gifts were provided from donations by local supermarkets , Veterans organizations , and community organizations to assure that each of approximately 400 residents recieved a bag of "thanks " . Valintine cards were also made by area elementary students which brought a smile to many a face.   The trip is annually orgainized by the " Cape May County Veterans Bureau " as part of "National Salute To Veterans Patients" with the aid of area volunteers who  find the trip as rewarding as those who benefit from the gifts. This was the 26th l trip ,  with the first starting in 1984 . The trip was organized by Charles Adelizzi and his volunteer staff .   Pictured are volunteers from Cape May County boarding the bus to Elsmire Delaware Veterans Hospital

Vineland “ VA” home veterans come to Cape May

Twenty five veterans and their escorts were treated to a “ Veterans Day ”dinner at Cape May VFW Post 386 and their Ladies Auxiliary .

Chaplin Jim Rooney led all in prayer remembering those who served and have served to protect the freedoms we all enjoy .

Short opening comments and greetings were then given by Cape May Post 386  Commander Andy Barber , Service Officer / Mess Sargeant Mark Fueller , Ladies Auxiliary President Dolly Showers and VFW District 17 / North Wildwood VFW Post 5941 Commander Joe Orlando .

The veterans then enjoyed a fine meal served by members of the VFW and their Ladies Auxiliary after which they joined their guests for moving conversations relating to their lives and military experiences . “ We even have an Army veteran that rode a horse when he first entered ” , commented a helper .

Upon leaving , each guest was given a gift of thanks provided by Post 386 Ladies Auxiliary and received thanks and promises to revisit .
